Hello everyone! My name is Lisa Hayes and I’m from South Bend, Indiana. I recently graduated from Purdue University with a Bachelor’s in Psychology. While in school, I was involved in various dance companies and church activities. It was a mission trip I took to Haiti about 2 years ago that became one of my biggest motivations to do volunteer service long term. I found the work to be very fulfilling and simply wanted to make it a bigger part of my life.
I will be going to San Francisco, CA to work at an all girl’s Catholic, Cristo Rey high school, called Immaculate Conception Academy. I’ll be helping take the girls to their work sites and also serve in the school’s offices including Admission and Corporate work-study. I eventually want to work for a non-profit organization, so I’m glad to get a chance to see how this school runs with such little income and am excited for the work experience! (And hope to get better at my Spanish!)
I’m also looking forward to my large living community of 15! I hope to have a lot of fun with those I’ll be living and serving. Along with the fun, I think I will gain a lot of wisdom from the sisters. They were all very warm and welcoming on my visit. I hope that our groups of volunteers can grow together and provide support through this year of service as well.
As far as my family goes, I have 2 older sisters, one of which got married this past year. We all enjoy traveling and have been to some interesting places, including Dominican Republic, Mexico, Germany, Bosnia, and Alaska. I’m glad they’ve been so supportive with me leaving and I expect that they’ll visit!
