Hi, I am Annie Hussey and I recently graduated from Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois with a degree in graphic design. I was born in Burlington, Vermont and therefore I consider myself a “True Vermonter.” Yes, Ben & Jerry’s is my favorite ice cream! Throughout my life I have lived in New Hampshire, Indiana, Massachusetts, and Illinois.

During the spring semester of my senior year at Dominican, Sister Melissa Waters called me into her office and asked me about my plans for after graduation. At the time I was applying for jobs in the graphic design field, but I was not having any luck finding employment. I told her that I took a class with my advisor and graphic design professor, Jean Bevier, and English Professor, Ellen McManus, called Art as Social Action. I told Sr. Melissa that I was considering doing design work for an organization because I realized my skills could make a difference in society. Her eyes lit up with excitement and she asked me if I had heard of Dominican Volunteers. The rest is history.

I am now going to be working for a wonderful organization called WomanCraft in Chicago as their program assistant. WomanCraft helps teach transitional women job skills, and after twelve weeks we help these women find new employment. At WomanCraft we make paper products such as notecards, stationary, and invitations using recycled materials such as shredded office paper, reclaimed flowers, and sunflower seeds to make original designs for everyday use or special occasions. I decided to do Dominican Volunteers so I could help others, grow as an individual, and start off my career in the right direction.
