bronx community
The community in the Bronx was a new venture for Dominican Volunteers in 2007, 2008, and 2009 who desired to minister in New York. The Bronx community was the only community where volunteers do not live with any vowed religious; instead they had a support team made up of Dominican Sisters (from the nearby congregations of Caldwell, Hope, Amityville, Sparkill, and Blauvelt) and two laity (former Dominican Volunteers). The volunteers lived in a 3-bedroom apartment located in the South Bronx, less than a mile from Yankee Stadium. This lively area of the Bronx is predominantly Hispanic (try explaining to someone from the Dominican Republic that you're a Dominican Volunteer!) and filled with the sounds of children playing in the street, sirens rushing by, and rhythmic Latino music. This community is not currently available, though call the DVUSA office to find out about other living arrangements in New York.
