A note from our Assistant Director, Allison Beyer:
I, Alison Beyer, am so excited to be part of DVUSA as Assistant Director. My passion for an integration of the Gospels into a life of service and continued spiritual formation brings me to this position with a grateful heart; I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to promote and share in the four pillars of prayer, study, community and ministry.
Originally from Brighton, MI I decided to attend a Catholic college to learn more about my Catholic identity in the face of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a Philosophy and Religious Studies major at Saint Mary’s College, I was captivated by questions of faith, pacifism, social justice, and the overall pursuit of a rich, meaningful life. Upon graduation I lived and worked on the Colville Indian Reservation in Omak, Washington with Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest. This experience directed all of my subsequent major life discernments. I was shaken by the experience of living and working with people in poverty. I was transformed by living in community with people whom I did not choose to live with but who over time I learned to love and treasure.
The experience of working with indigenous peoples within a Catholic context took me next to study Spanish at the Maryknoll Language Institute in Cochabamba, Bolivia. While there I learned of the Maryknoll Bolivian Mission Immersion Program. I returned to the U.S. and quickly recognized a great pull to return to Bolivia with Maryknoll again, this time in the role of a volunteer. My ministry and community life in Cochabamba was at once desperately challenging and endlessly enriching, ultimately leading me into a more critical, profound faith and lifelong friendships.
I am delighted to work for Dominican Volunteers USA, knowing that I will be able to accompany current volunteers in their own experiences of ministry and community life and to so further the mission of the ministry sites. I look very much forward to sharing in the Dominican Volunteers’ year of service—often the ride of your life!—and to ensuring the continued success and depth of this truly unique program.
